Diplomas for the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy, Master of Arts,* Master of Science, and Master of Engineering are awarded by the Dean and faculty representatives from each department or program.
No tickets are required for the ceremony, but all degree candidates must fill out Commencement attendance forms indicating whether or not they will attend the diploma ceremony. The attendance form is available only online and may be accessed here. The deadline for submission of attendance forms is April 15. Degree candidates who do not respond by this date may not be able to be included in the diploma ceremony, or may not be able to sit with their departments. In addition, this form must be completed in order to receive your diploma in person or by mail.
Degree candidates will sit in the orchestra section by department or degree program and will be called to the stage individually to receive a diploma from the Dean. Guests may find seats on the sides and in the balconies. No tickets are required either for degree candidates or guests. The handicapped-accessible entrance to Woolsey Hall is via Beinecke Plaza.
Note: The Woolsey Hall ceremony awards all PhD diplomas and those of students in terminal Masters programs, with the exception of those in Jackson Institute (see below). Students receiving the MA, MS or MPhil degree en route to the PhD degree do not normally attend the GS Diploma Ceremony in person. Please email GSCommencement@yale.edu if you wish to discuss this as an en route degree recipient.
*Students receiving master’s degrees from the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs receive their diplomas in a ceremony held at Horchow Hall, 55 Hillhouse Avenue. Included are Master of Arts and Master of Advanced Study candidates in Global Affairs. A complimentary luncheon and reception for Jackson graduates and guests immediately follows in Horchow Hall.
Professional photographs will be taken of each student receiving a diploma, at both the Woolsey Hall and Horchow Hall diploma ceremonies. Commencement Photos, a commercial service, will mail degree candidates information about purchasing their photos. Candidates may also contact Commencement Photos directly to inquire.
